What are Dentures?
Dentures are removable dental appliances used to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are artificial teeth attached to a supporting structure that resembles the natural gums. Dentures are custom-made to fit an individual’s mouth and are typically made from acrylic resin or a combination of metal and acrylic materials.
There are two main types of dentures:
- Complete Dentures: These are used when all of the natural teeth are missing. Complete dentures can be further categorized into two types:
- Conventional Dentures: These are made and placed in the mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and the tissues have healed, which may take several months.
- Immediate Dentures: These are made in advance and can be positioned in the mouth immediately after the remaining teeth are removed. While immediate dentures offer the advantage of not having to be without teeth during the healing period, they often require adjustments as the gums and bones shrink over time.
- Partial Dentures: These are used when some natural teeth remain. Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is connected by metal framework or clasps that hold the denture in place.
